Ariel Riveros is an Australian-based poet, scholar and registered art therapist coach; and progenitor of the PhiloMedica Online project.
Writing to my strength is one of the things that makes me happy. Being the finest I can be, expressive power and skill. Eloquence is a lucky occurrence.
I’ve done a shitload of work during my health and housing issues to be stymied by the publishing landscape. The current budget doesn’t ameliorate things and as has been said by many others Australian poetry is a small pool of opportunities and any apprenticeship is also mediated by friendship as a local poet had told me in the past.
Perhaps my style is non-Australian and doesnt fit hand in glove with small l liberal political thrust. Here I might just redirect my writing to prose and non-fiction.
I was very lucky to work in the Philomedica Online research group which has finished its project life some time ago. That research even as adjunct to mental health, mad studies and antipsychiatry is a radical veer under the sails of continental thought and physics as heuristic. It is radically different to the Australian context and the industry locally is caught in the crux of national organisation, self reflection on terms of reference and lumbering statism.
These works are not foundationally intersectional but emergentist. These two from the ground up aren’t mutually exclusive. There is another point where the research doesn’t fit hand in glove with classical constructivist discourses of power. The politics is of experience and of going beyond medication. The Philomedica Online team did represent various intersectional groups. In itself it was not a project against institutions in the political activist or collective sense though it was an aim for our posited forums. Lots of great work around the world by activists, peers and consumers on the case in any case.
The work I proffered was research countering the medical model as science with a consumer generated science with physics as heuristic and non trauma based treatment (as distinct to trauma informed care that I support all health professionals understand.) One of the team’s authors quipped that consumer generated science is has little inroad to a world movement mostly in the thrall of medical psychiatry as state practice. All power to the political focus #protestAPA2018
I feel medical psychiatry must bend under the pressure or break but I’m not hanging around and doing nothing about it myself or in this case for myself and others. It’s the end of my chronic illness. Acute episodes may come or go.
I have new project formings and past groups will now continue that entered into the post pharmaceutical slipstream in the past months ie Supersentient Network art
and mutual community care encompassing human virtuality.
Post pharmaceutical segment movement – #unrecovery or not – stand alone yet relating to the plethora of other movements resisting psychiatry is where this current work will produce. Plenty of other people doing post pharmaceutical work already out there. Human virtuality also merges with variant forms of life. Time to cast an inquiring eye around the world.
My next intended writing project will be to outline experienced time based synaesthetic phenomenology as a distinct form of life and productivity – and continue human virtual mutual care and study into conceptual physics. Perhaps a holiday to the Continent to see if I like it there.
